Domestic Violence

What is domestic violence?

Domestic violence includes any form of abuse in your relationship, or in your family.  It's not just physical or sexual abuse.  It can include abusive language, verbal threats or threatening behaviour, emotional, psychological, or economic abuse (for example withholding money or otherwise 'punishing' someone financially), or any other behaviour  that controls or dominates another person and causes them to fear for their own safety or wellbeing or the safety and wellbeing of someone else.

Domestic violence can affect men, women, children, step-children, same-sex partners, grandparents, and any other family members and members of your household. Not all domestic violence scars are physical.

Contact me about your options

What should you do?

If you are a victim of domestic violence, or someone you know is a victim, it is important that you get help.  You can report the matter to the Queensland Police , or contact a free domestic violence assistance service.

You should also speak to a lawyer.  A lawyer can help you apply for an appropriate order that will protect you and your family against further domestic violence.  Feel free to get in touch with me for a free, confidential chat.

What should you do if you've been accused of domestic violence?

If someone has accused you of domestic violence, you should get legal advice immediately.  Domestic violence allegations, and the effect of a domestic violence protection order, can be complex and can have wide-ranging ramifications, including effects on your employment, time with your children, and where you can live.  Please get in touch with me for further advice.

Breaches of existing domestic violence orders

If there has been a breach of an existing domestic violence order (i.e. there has been further domestic violence, or a specific condition of the order has been broken) you should speak to lawyer immediately.

A breach of an existing order is an offence, and if proven in Court then the punishment can be a warning, more stringent conditions on the existing order, an extension of time for the order, or imprisonment.   Feel free to contact me for a free, confidential chat about your circumstances and how I can help you if you have been accused of breaching a protection order.
